Sugaring Spotlight: Allison Ritter of Ritter Skin & Sugar in Newburgh, NY

At Sugaring Source, we love shining a light on professionals who pour their heart, skill, and soul into the sugaring craft. This month, we’re heading to Newburgh, NY, to meet Allison Ritter, owner of Ritter Skin & Sugar—a sugaring professional who turned a career shift into a passion-driven business.

From Career Change to Sugaring Success

When COVID shut down Allison’s previous career path, she found herself at a crossroads. Her former employer offered her a spot at a spa and the chance to learn sugaring. Allison took the leap, and it turned out to be a defining moment—she dove in headfirst and never looked back.

Licensed since January 2020, Allison’s background in cosmetology and years of experience in the salon industry gave her a solid foundation. But it was the hands-on experience at one of her area’s sugaring spas that sealed the deal: sugaring would become her specialty.

A Safe, Skilled, and Satisfying Experience

Ritter Skin & Sugar is tucked inside Hairvana HV, where Allison offers far more than hair removal. Her menu includes customized facials, intimate skincare, and lash and brow services. Still, her love for sugaring stands out—especially because it’s gentle on the skin, sanitary, and (in her words) easier to work with than wax.

One of her go-to techniques? Smaller sections for Brazilians and bikini services. It’s a time-saver, more comfortable for the client, and often means just one pass per section. Combine that with education on the hair growth cycle, detailed home care instructions, and retail recommendations, and clients leave not only smooth, but empowered to maintain their results.

Busting Myths & Building Comfort

Allison is quick to debunk the idea that sugaring hurts more than waxing. She’s seen firsthand how it’s more comfortable for most people and ideal for every skin type. While it’s not pain-free, she believes the difference is clear once clients experience it.

But it’s not just technique that keeps clients coming back—it’s Allison’s energy. Her treatment room is a safe space where people feel seen, heard, and welcomed. The result? Many clients comment that they love her personality as much as her sugaring skills.

Overcoming Doubt & Embracing Growth

Like many small business owners, Allison started out with self-doubt. She questioned her ability to run a business and deliver the kind of service she envisioned. But she pushed forward, proving to herself—and her growing client base—that she had everything it takes.

She encourages new sugarists to show themselves patience. “You’re not going to be perfect right away, or fully booked right away,” she says. “Work hard, stay patient, and success will follow.”

Committed to Learning & Sharing

Allison recently attended Sugar Con in Cleveland, Ohio, soaking up as much knowledge as possible to refine her services. She currently uses Sugar Smac products exclusively—loving everything from their sugar paste to their exfoliating bar soaps. She also retails Skin Script and Hale & Hush, with client favorites including the Clarifying Toner Pads, Clarifying Wash, and Hush Hydrate Gel.

Her passion for learning extends to a desire to teach. In five years, Allison envisions a larger space, a team of employees, and a thriving sugaring community in her area. She’s already thinking ahead to offering education and mentoring for newer professionals, helping them “get their gloves & fly.”

Fun Facts & Favorite Things

When she’s not in the treatment room, Allison is often in the pole fitness studio—a passion she’s pursued for nearly five years. Known as the “chameleon” dancer among friends, she switches up her style with every performance.

Her playlists often feature ’90s pop or The Weeknd, and if she hadn’t chosen esthetics, she’d likely still be working in veterinary medicine—she’s a licensed vet tech with seven years in that field.

Her business mantra? A Ron Swanson gem from Parks & Recreation:

“Never half ass two things, whole ass one thing.”

It’s a reminder that going all in on her business was the right choice—and it’s paid off in a thriving, client-loved practice.

Allison’s vision for the future is rooted in kindness, collaboration, and community. She hopes to leave behind a legacy of beauty professionals supporting one another—not competing. And we can’t think of a better mark to make on this industry.
